●【概略】
パウロ・マッキャリーニ（Paolo Macchiarini、英語でマチアリーニと発音。日本の新聞はマッキアリーニ。写真出典）は、スイスに生まれ、スウェーデン・カロリンスカ医科大学（Karolinska Institutet）・教授（Professor of Regenerative Medicine）・医師で、カロリンスカ医科大学のACTREM所長でもある(ACTREM：Advanced Center for Regenerative Medicine)。英国のユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドン（University College London, UCL）の名誉教授。専門は幹細胞・移植外科。
2008年6月、患者の幹細胞を使った気管移植手術に世界で最初に成功した。この方法は、医学界に革命を起こすほどインパクトがある治療法だった。それで、パウロ・マッキャリーニは。人工気管移植手術の世界的権威となったのである。特許もいくつか取得した。
2012年（53歳）、しかし、同じ分野の医師・研究者からマッキャリーニの研究論文に疑念が持たれた。論文1報が撤回され、他の論文も含め、ねつ造・改ざんがあるのではないかと調査が始まった。
2015年7月現在（56歳）、カロリンスカ医科大学・学長の裁定はでていない。
